General Guidelines for Loss Prevention
  • When buying a second-hand laptop, ask for a receipt and/or the original receipt from its first purchase. Also, when paying for a used laptop, make use of a check instead of paying with cash.
  • Keep a record of your system. Record your laptop's model name, number, and serial number and place this information in a secure place. In the event that your laptop is stolen, you will be able to provide the authorities with proper information.
  • Remember that carrying a laptop bag tells everyone that you are carrying something of value. Be cautious of this and, if possible, use a well-padded and inconspicuous bag instead.
  • Do not place laptops near windows, where a thief can easily smash the glass and grab your laptop.
  • Label all laptop bags and all equipment with your personal contact information.

Travel (Air and Auto)

Air Travel
  • When traveling through airports, never leave your laptop unattended.
  • Do not check your laptop in as baggage. Always have it with you as a carry-on.
  • When going through the baggage x-ray machine, let your laptop go through while keeping an eye on it. Do not let it out of your sight, especially if it has gone through the x-ray machine while you are still being checked by security. Do not put your laptop into the x-ray machine while the person in front of you is still being checked by security.
  • If airport security requests that the laptop be turned on, handle your laptop yourself and try to avoid having them touch your laptop.
  • Equip your laptop bag with a lock even though it will go with you as a carry-on.
  • If you use your laptop during the flight, never leave it unattended.
  • Keep your laptop underneath the seat in front of you and not in the overhead compartment.
Auto Travel
  • Never leave your laptop inside your vehicle. If it must be left in your vehicle, keep it locked in its bag and out of sight. Merely covering your laptop with a magazine or a jacket is not sufficient.
  • Discreetly put away your laptop in the trunk or under the seat of your car.
  • If your laptop must be left in the car, do not leave any windows rolled down. All windows must be rolled up completely.

At Work
  • Engraving your laptops will deter thieves from stealing your equipment, as reselling engraved machines proves to be difficult.
  • Make use of physical locks for your laptop when in the office, as laptops are easily snatched from desks when no one is looking.
  • Lock your office to prevent people from coming in uninvited.
  • Back up all your data.
  • Keep an inventory of all your equipment.
